LAN
Local Area Network - A network that covers a limited distance such as a single building or facility, to allow computers to share information and resources.

Laptop
A computer small enough to sit on your lap. The laptop computer's small size allows you to take it almost anywhere and access the Internet. It is considered a must for the business traveler and others who are mobile.

Laser Transmissions
A wireless network standard that uses laser beams for the transmission of data.

Latency
The time it takes for a packet to go from sender to receiver, across a network connection.

LBA
Logical Block Address

Leased Line
Refers to a phone line that is rented for exclusive 24-hour, 7 -days-a-week use from your location to another location. The highest speed data connections require a leased line.

LLC

Load
Term referring to downloading or uploading. If a web page is loading slow it means that it's taking a long time to download to your screen.

Local Bus
It is a separate bus in the computer designed to provide extra fast access to the CPU for certain devices, such as video cards. Unlike the main bus it is not connected to most other parts of the computer.

LocalTalk
AppleTalk networks are usually called LocalTalk.

Location
Refers to an Internet address.

Login
The account or username that is used to gain access to a computer system. Also refers to the act of entering into a computer system, for example: "Login to the network."

LOL
An acronym for Laugh Out Loud.

LPT1, LPT2
Line Printer. The file names assigned to the parallel printer ports on a PC.
